welcome to north cornwall!
North Cornwall's artists and crafts people can be found in its towns and many villages, by the sea and inland on the moors, and complement the region's growing number of art galleries. Less recognised than West Cornwall's St Ives and St Just artist colonies, North Cornwall is emerging as a new and important centre for arts and creativity. This guide will assist you in finding good contemporary Cornish art, either by visiting an artist, potter, photographer or sculptor directly, or through an art gallery exhibiting Cornish works. Feel free to print out any page to take with you to Cornwall. ROUTES introduces you to the artists and galleries easily reached from Cornwall's most popular visitor routes. Whether cycling the Camel Trail or the Cornish Way, walking the Coastal Footpath, or driving along the A39 Atlantic Highway or across Bodmin Moor on the A30, all the galleries and artists nearby are conveniently listed. AREAS takes the towns and larger villages of North Cornwall, presenting the artists and galleries located there or nearby. Some are featured on more than one page, depending on where they live or work. The ARTISTS are happy for studio visits, though understandably request you contact them first to arrange a mutually convenient time. We recommend telephoning the day before your planned visit, though every artist will have their own preferences. There will be times that they can't receive visitors - perhaps preparing for an exhibition, or painting outdoors that day.
Cornish GALLERIES generally are open daily though some shut on early-closing day. Not all galleries open through the winter, and we especially recommend contacting a gallery first if you plan to visit between Christmas and Easter. Many of our galleries tend to be small and friendly, showing work from a dozen or so select artists, but several have monthly solo exhibitions - most notably the Camelford and Wadebridge galleries. Padstow, Wadebridge and Camelford each have galleries owned by one of the exhibiting artists. We wish you a happy holiday and hope you enjoy our art and countryside! FEATURED NORTH CORNWALL ARTIST Richard Treleaven Renowned for his love and specialist knowledge of peregrine falcons, Richard Treleaven portrays these birds of prey in dramatic and moody landscapes of the North Cornwall coast. Working in oils, he brings the same atmosphere and energy to his landscapes of Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. Richard was a founder member of the newly formed Society of Wild Life Artists in 1961. He has exhibited in Cork Street and annually at the SWLA's Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. He has also written and illustrated two books about the life of peregrines. Richard lives and works in South Petherwin near Launceston where studio visitors are always welcome. |
